Cheyenne High School has established a culture where academic excellence is recognized and students are pushed to meet their goals. Cheyenne High School offers 15 different AP courses, a college-level English course (CSN Jumpstart), and has had its robotics and CyberPatriot teams compete in national-level competitions. Students’ academic success is recognized and celebrated though various student incentive programs that involve students’ entire families.
In addition to offering students a variety of rigorous courses, Cheyenne High School has an extensive community outreach program which affords students the opportunity to participate in meaningful real-world scenarios.
Government classes visit the UNLV Boyd School of Law to present their Voter’s Rights Case Study projects. CTE Culinary students in the Skills USA club serve the community, take field trips to local businesses and have earned scholarship money through their participation in the club. Students in Cheyenne High School’s Cyberdefense program get the opportunity to job-shadow various computer science and cyber security companies in the Las Vegas area. They also compete in a cyberdefense competition and are currently ranked 98th in the world. Cheyenne High School also boasts the only “Show Band” in the Clark County School District, emphasizing pageantry, crowd entertainment and musicality. The Cheyenne High School “Soundtrack of North Las Vegas” Desert Shields Marching Band is beloved in the North Las Vegas community.
Cheyenne High School provides support to students who need it. Cheyenne’s graduation coaches and academic counselors meet with students on a regular basis to track and monitor their attendance and grades. Graduation coaches and counselors communicate with parents, review transcripts, recommend students for Credit Retrieval courses, and teach them how to self-advocate and seek assistance, such as tutoring.
Cheyenne High School’s ability to build a culture that focuses on academic achievement resulted in an 18 percent graduation increase, for a total of 92 percent.
